Heavy police deployment continued in Maddur town on Tuesday after a stone-pelting incident during a Ganpati procession triggered protests and clashes on Monday evening.
Shops and markets remain closed under prohibitory orders, while Hindu organisations in the region are holding meetings to discuss the issue. Police have arrested 21 people in connection with the violence. A mild lathi charge was used on protesters after they gathered in large numbers.
The clash reportedly occurred when the Ganesh idol immersion procession passed near a mosque. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said police had advised the procession not to halt in the area. “When the procession passed near the mosque, some stone pelting took place and a minor clash broke out. Whoever is guilty, legal action will be taken. The BJP leaders are indulging in provocation,” he said, adding that the law will act impartially against all culprits.
Karnataka Home Minister also assured that the situation is under control and police have taken necessary steps to prevent further unrest.
